Because of the growing importance of organometallic complexes in bioorganometallic chemistry and material sciences, on one hand, and of heavier main group elements in organometallic chemistry, on the other hand, the scope of the Journal has been phytochemistry letters, and work covering these fields is also considered. Besides original papers, the Journal of Organometallic Chemistry publishes review articles communications and notes.

Although there is continued interest in synthetic and structural studies the last decade has seen a growing interest in the potential of organometallic chemistry to provide answers to problems in catalysis synthetic organic chemistry and also in the development of new materials.
